Exploring WinLink
We met on September 28th at Bern’s Barn where Barb showed the group the website Winlink Wednesdays
Winlink Wednesday is a weekly amateur radio digital net where check-ins are accomplished by using the Winlink (global email via amateur radio) system.
The primary purpose of Winlink Wednesday is to encourage the regular use of the Winlink system, expand your skills with Winlink, and practice on a regular basis. This helps to keep you sharp so that, if needed you can perform confidently and professionally.
Check-ins may be submitted anytime between 0000 and 2359 (ET) each Wednesday. Messages may be sent by accessing any RMS station (Winlink Gateway, HF and P2P) that the participant can reach, either directly or via a digipeater or Node. These are referred to as “RMS Check-ins.”
On the first Wednesday of each month, check-ins include a brief weather snapshot on the second line of the message. On the third Wednesday of each month, check-ins attach the Winlink-native ICS-213 form.
Barb said she joined the “Check-ins” this past Wednesday. She sent her Winlink messages this week via our VHF Gateway and also directly over HF. She will be sending P2P soon as they have a frequency and a station to receive.
Steve suggested we might want to consider a Winlink Net. Barb said they have sub nets she will look into. We may want to join the Wednesday Net as they send out a roster so you know who is using Winlink in case of emergencies. Then we can start our own and use digipeaters.
